Gluing ceramic plates by hand was slow and adhesive leaked out at the sides
PTC heaters for cars use ceramic plates that have to be glued together into a stack. This was done by hand. Besides being slow, the process let adhesive leak out at the sides of the plates.
TDK Šumperk needed a automatic machine that would take the plates after pressing and stack them - fast enough to keep up with the press and precise enough to eliminate adhesive leakage.
A special gluing technology and a two-axis vacuum manipulator for stacking
We built GLUSTA, a large and mechanically demanding machine in which the biggest engineering challenge was designing how the plates are transferred to the adhesive and precisely stacked. It uses a special gluing technology that is not publicly available.
Much of the engineering went into positioning accuracy and cycle speed - everything is done with servo axes and aligners, plus a buffer for finished stacks that extends the machine's autonomy. The operator at the output buffer only removes finished stacks by hand.
