Automating bag labelling and stacking for SANO

Labelling bags with declarations by hand was slow and depended on the worker on the line. We built PANDE, an automatic station that picks up unlabelled bags, prints declarations on the fly and stacks the finished bags into a bundle at the output.

01 - Challenge

Labelling bags by hand was slow and depended on the worker on the line

Unlabelled bags had to be marked with a declaration before leaving the packaging line. This was done by hand, which slowed down throughput and introduced variability depending on the worker at the station.

SANO Popovača needed an automatic station that picks up the bags after filling, prints the declaration directly on the bag on the fly and stacks the finished bags into a bundle - with no stoppages and no manual labelling.

02 - Solution

An SMC manipulator for transfer, printing on the fly and automatic bundling

We built PANDE, a station in which SMC pneumatic cylinders bring the unlabelled bags to a lifting table. There, a manipulator on SMC axes picks them up by vacuum and, after positioning with servo axes, places them on a moving belt.

On the belt, a printer prints the declaration directly on the bag as it passes - for us the printer is an external unit to which the machine only sends a print start signal. After printing, the bags are stacked on a second conveyor that counts the set number of pieces and, once it is reached, moves the finished bundle to the end of the line.

SMC manipulator for bag transfer

A manipulator built from SMC axes on a profile rail, cylinders and vacuum suction cups picks up the bags and guides them through the whole machine, with servo axes for exact positioning before lifting.

Automatic printing of declarations on the fly

The printer prints the declaration directly on the bag while it moves along the belt - the machine only sends it a print start signal, with no line stoppage.

Counting and bundling at the output

After printing, the bags are stacked on a second conveyor that counts the set number of pieces; once the count is reached, a stopper opens and the finished bundle leaves the line.

03 - Result

A station that picks up, labels and stacks bags with no manual work

0 manual
bag labelling - the entire printing and stacking process is automated
2 conveyors
one for transfer and printing, one for counting and bundling
Vacuum
lifting of bags on SMC servo axes, with precise positioning
Defined count
of bags in every output bundle, with no manual counting
