SOVEN - tensile tester for force testing

A benchtop device that tests the breaking force of welds between contacts, springs and other parts up to 500 N. It stores the measurements and displays them graphically in a web application with a database.

How it works

Tensile and compression testing with force and displacement measurement

A Nanotec geared motor drives the spindle that moves the upper holder of the test piece. A linear scale tracks displacement in millimeters, while a load cell on Modbus communication measures the force in newtons at every point of the stroke. The operator places the part in the holders - a weld between contacts, a spring or another test piece - selects one of five preprogrammed recipes and starts the test.

The recipe is loaded into the PLC, which controls the spindle according to the set speed and starting position, while a .NET Core application reads the data from the PLC via the snap7 library and stores it in the database for each sample. The measurement is repeated up to the set number of samples, after which the operator saves and finishes the measurement, and the system generates a report with tabular and graphical results - as a PDF or as an export for further analysis.

Control

Interface and control logic

The machine is operated through a web application on an industrial PC panel, while the device itself has an emergency stop mushroom button, start/stop/reset buttons and push buttons for jogging the spindle up and down.

Physical control station

  • Emergency stop mushroom button
  • PC panel with web application
  • Start, stop, reset and return-to-home buttons
  • Push buttons for jogging the spindle up/down

Web application features

  • Selecting and loading the test recipe into the PLC - test type, speed, starting position, number of samples
  • Graph of force F(N) versus displacement S(mm) for the last sample, with zoom
  • Histogram of minimum and maximum force per sample with automatic result evaluation
  • Table of all samples - set and measured position, min./max. and measured force, result
  • Operator login and logout and a record archive with data export
  • Error log and application settings

Technical details

Linear scale and load cell on Modbus

The linear scale tracks spindle displacement in millimeters, and the load cell on Modbus communication measures force in newtons - together they give the complete force characteristic over the full stroke of every test cycle.

.NET Core and React architecture

A .NET Core application communicates with the Siemens S7-1200 PLC via the snap7 library, processes the data and stores it in the database, while a React frontend displays measurement graphs in real time via REST API and SignalR.

Five types of preprogrammed tests

CRUD recipe management makes it possible to configure five test types - from quality control of welds between contacts to tensile and compression tests of springs - with reports as PDF or export for further analysis.
